Frequently Asked Questions

This one-week group course is focused on lecturers, researchers and teaching staff who are working on degree programmes and academic research at universities / institutions of higher education, and who are non-native speakers of English.

After registration, participants on this course programme will receive:

  1. a pre-course questionnaire that will help trainers find out more about your learning needs
  2. a recommended reading list to prepare yourself for various aspects of the course
  3. information about York to prepare yourself for your cultural experience
  4. information about the Europass Mobility Certificate

At the end of the course, you will:

  • have improved English language skills, confidence and fluency through increased command of vocabulary / grammar focusing on specific subject areas and general educational themes
  • have developed core professional communication competences to design, structure and deliver presentations and lectures and participate in international seminars and conferences
  • have increased understanding of the challenges of working across cultures with a specific focus on international study skills and communicating with international student and academic groups
  • know which interpersonal communication skills underpin successful communication across cultures, including building rapport, influencing, networking, managing conflict and creating trust
  • understand different approaches to learning, lecturing and working in international contexts

An interactive communicative approach is used throughout which lets participants experience the activities and methodologies that they can use in their own teaching contexts.

Key theories and practical ideas are discussed and explored thoroughly with hands-on input sessions where participants play an active role in all sessions to maximise their learning.

Input sessions involve brainstorming, case study analysis, problem-solving, and role-play tasks, both in pair- and group-work scenarios.

Participants are asked to reflect on the tasks carried out in each session, with discussion drawing on their own pedagogical knowledge and experience of diverse teaching contexts.

Participants are also introduced to key websites and other resources related to the further development of their teaching skills and personal professional development.

Language skills are also developed and feedback given where appropriate.

The course ends with an evaluation session in which you will be asked to reflect upon the knowledge you have gained during the course.

You will be encouraged to create a Personal Development Action Plan, and select activities that you would like to try out in your own teaching.

There is the opportunity for follow-up online training sessions to further consolidate your learning and reflect on how you are implementing what you learnt into your own contexts.
