Developing Intercultural Communication Skills

Can be delivered in York or online.

What is the course about?

This course has two main and related objectives: firstly, developing your own personal skills as a professional to be highly effective in an international institution: secondly, developing the pedagogical skills to teach intercultural communication skills successfully to learners.

Frequently Asked Questions

This course is for teachers, trainers and other educational professionals who want to better understand the challenges of intercultural communication for themselves, and how to teach intercultural communication more effectively to their learners.

After registration, participants on this course programme will receive:

  1. a pre-course questionnaire that will help your trainers find out more about your learning needs
  2. a recommended reading list to prepare yourself for various aspects of the course
  3. information about York to prepare yourself for your cultural experience
  4. information about the Europass Mobility Certificate

At the end of the course, you will:

  • have gained a better understanding of different approaches to intercultural communication skills training
  • be more familiar with a range of different intercultural competence models, theories and approaches
  • be more aware of the role which attitude and perception have on intercultural communication
  • have increased your knowledge of which interpersonal skills underpin successful communication across cultures e.g. building rapport, influencing, managing conflict, etc.
  • have improved your ability to assess the effectiveness of intercultural training activities
  • have new ideas on how to design intercultural training courses to develop intercultural communication skills

An interactive communicative approach is used throughout which lets participants experience the activities and methodologies that they can use in their own teaching contexts.

Key theories and practical ideas are discussed and explored thoroughly with hands-on input sessions, with participants playing an active role in all sessions to maximise their learning.

Input sessions involve brainstorming, case study analysis, problem-solving, and role-play tasks, both in pair- and group-work scenarios.

Participants are asked to reflect on the tasks carried out in each session, with discussion drawing on their own pedagogical knowledge and experience in diverse teaching contexts.

Participants are also introduced to key websites and other resources to support the further development of their teaching skills and personal professional development.

Language skills are also developed with feedback given where appropriate.

The course ends with an evaluation session in which you will be asked to reflect upon the knowledge you have gained during the course.

You will be encouraged to create a Personal Development Action Plan, and select activities that you would like to try out in your own classes.

There is the opportunity for follow-up online training sessions to further consolidate your learning and reflect on how you are implementing what you learned into your own contexts.
