Developing Soft Skills for English Language Teaching

Category:

Can be delivered in York or online.

What is the course about?

This course examines the concept of soft skills and its importance to modern English language teaching. The course has two main and related objectives: firstly, developing participants' own soft skills as a teaching professional; secondly, developing the pedagogical skills to teach soft skills successfully to learners.

Frequently Asked Questions

This course is for all professionals who want to better understand how they can develop their own soft skills as well as how to integrate soft skills into their own teaching practice.

After registration, participants on this course programme will receive:

  1. a pre-course questionnaire that will help your trainers find out more about your learning needs
  2. a recommended reading list to prepare yourself for various aspects of the course
  3. information about York to prepare yourself for your cultural experience
  4. information about the Europass Mobility Certificate

At the end of the course, you will:

  • have increased your understanding of what soft skills are, and their importance in English language teaching
  • have explored the Core24 curriculum of key people skills developed by York Associates, which covers such areas as emotional intelligence, rapport building, influencing and leadership skills
  • have considered the ethical challenges which arise when teaching soft skills
  • have useful tools to make your classroom environment safe when teaching soft skills
  • have developed your own soft skills in areas highly relevant for you personally.

An interactive communicative approach is used throughout which lets participants experience first-hand the activities and methodologies which they can use in their own teaching contexts.

Key theories and practical ideas are discussed and explored thoroughly with hands-on input sessions where participants play an active role to maximise their learning.

Input sessions involve brainstorming, case study analysis, problem-solving, and role-play tasks, both in pair- and group-work scenarios.

Participants are asked to reflect on the tasks carried out in each session, followed by discussion drawing on their own pedagogical knowledge and experience in diverse teaching contexts.

Participants are also introduced to key websites and other resources related to the further development of their teaching skills and personal professional development.

Language skills are also developed and feedback given where appropriate.

The course ends with an evaluation session in which you will be asked to reflect upon the knowledge you have gained during the course.

You will be encouraged to create a Personal Development Action Plan, and select activities that you would like to try out in your own classes.

There is the opportunity for follow-up online training to further consolidate your learning and explore how you are implementing what you learnt into your own contexts.

If you are from a country outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you will need a visa. Students from certain countries do not need to apply for a visa before arriving in the UK. You can check if you need to apply for a visa on the UK Visas and Immigration website.
